Precision Contours offers two related injectables: Kybella, Allergan’s FDA-approved branded deoxycholic acid, and PCDC, a compounded formulation used for a broader range of body areas. Both are built on deoxycholic acid chemistry that has been studied and refined in aesthetic medicine for decades.

Where can treatment be applied?

Where Kybella and PCDC fit depends on the part of your body you want to refine.

Kybella for the chin. The most common place we use Kybella is the chin area, where it targets submental fat — the soft pocket of fullness under the chin that creates a double chin. This is Kybella’s longest-running and most-studied use, and it remains our most popular Precision Contours treatment.

Kybella for love handles. Kybella also works well on love handles — the small, persistent fat pockets along the flanks that often resist diet and exercise. It tends to deliver the best results when you have smaller, well-defined flank fat.

PCDC for a wider range of body areas. Our second Precision Contours injectable is PCDC — a compounded fat dissolving formulation built on the same deoxycholic acid mechanism, designed to address a wider range of body areas. PCDC can target the abdomen, upper arms, banana rolls, bra line, and outer thighs, among others.

How Fat Dissolving Injection Treatments Work

Deoxycholic acid is a molecule your body already produces to help digest and absorb dietary fat. When we inject it directly into a pocket of unwanted fat, it disrupts the membranes of the fat cells in that area, breaking them down. Your lymphatic system then clears the destroyed fat cells over the following weeks. Once those cells are gone, they can’t grow back or accumulate fat again.

How and where those injections are placed is what makes every Precision Contours plan specifically yours. The treatment areas, the number of sessions, the spacing between visits, and the amount of medication per session all vary based on your anatomy, your skin, the volume of fat being addressed, and the contour you’re working toward. Each plan is mapped out during a highly personalized consultation with one of our licensed, experienced Prime MD providers, built specifically for your goals.

Procedure: How to Prepare and What To Expect During A Precision Contours Session

Preparation starts before you arrive. Any time fat volume is reduced, the overlying skin can lose tone unless collagen and elastin production are supported — and that’s true for Precision Contours treatments too. Our expert recommendation is to apply BodiFirm cream twice daily for two weeks before treatment and four weeks afterward to help the skin retract evenly as fat is reduced.

When you arrive for your session, your provider maps the treatment area with a grid pattern of evenly spaced reference points that guides each small injection. This is what produces an even, balanced result. Every Precision Contours session is performed by a licensed, experienced Prime MD provider trained in facial and body contouring.

Most sessions take thirty minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment area and the number of injection sites. Topical numbing cream is standard, and additional comfort measures — cold compresses, vibrating devices, supportive positioning — are available throughout so the session is as comfortable as it is precise.

Recovery And Results — Fat Reduction Timeline

Recovery from a Precision Contours session is light. You can expect some swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites for the first few days, but there’s no serious downtime — most patients return to normal activity immediately and to full activity within twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

Results build over weeks rather than days. As your body clears the destroyed fat cells through the lymphatic system, the treated area gradually refines — visible change typically begins around four weeks in, with the most noticeable reduction at eight to twelve weeks. Because results compound across a series, we generally schedule follow-up sessions four to six weeks apart, with each plan tailored to your treatment area and goals.

When you maintain a stable weight after your final session, those results are long lasting. The fat cells we destroy are gone for good, but the cells that remain can still expand with significant weight gain. Most patients aim to stay within five to ten pounds of where they were at treatment, supported by the kind of consistent habits — whole foods, adequate protein, regular movement — that protect the contour you worked for.

Side Effects of Kybella and PCDC

The deoxycholic acid in both Kybella and PCDC has been used in aesthetic medicine since the 1960s. That decades-long track record means side effects are well documented — and for most patients, predictable, mild, and short-lived.

More serious effects are uncommon when sessions are performed by an experienced injector with proper technique and dosing. If you notice anything unusual, prolonged, or worsening — particularly difficulty swallowing or breathing after a chin treatment, spreading redness, or signs of infection — contact us right away.

Most Common Side Effects

Most patients experience some combination of these reactions, typically settling within days to a couple of weeks:

• Swelling. The most common response, and an expected part of how the treatment works. Swelling in the treated area is usually visible for the first few days and gradually subsides over one to two weeks, depending on the area and the volume treated. Cold compresses help.
• Bruising at injection sites. Small bruises are common where the needle entered the skin. Most fade within a week or so. Avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, ibuprofen) for about a week before treatment reduces the likelihood.
• Tenderness or numbness. Mild soreness in the treated area is normal in the first few days. Some patients also experience temporary numbness or changes in sensation that resolve as healing progresses.

Possible Side Effects

These are uncommon when treatment is performed properly, but worth knowing about:

• Nerve-related effects. Temporary nerve weakness can occur, most often affecting the muscles that control the corners of the mouth after chin treatments — sometimes producing an uneven smile. When it happens, it’s almost always temporary and resolves on its own within weeks. We monitor for it at follow-ups, and we ask you to flag anything you notice between visits.
• Difficulty swallowing. A small percentage of patients experience trouble swallowing after submental injections — typically mild and short-lived. Severe or worsening symptoms warrant urgent attention; contact us immediately or seek emergency care if breathing is affected.
• Localized hair loss at injection sites. Rarely, temporary hair loss can occur at the injection site, particularly relevant for chin treatments in male patients. Regrowth typically occurs over the months following treatment.

Candidacy And Contraindications For Fat Reduction Injections

Precision Contours works best for patients who are at or near a stable, healthy weight with localized fat that resists diet and exercise — not as a weight-loss tool, but as a refinement tool for the body shape you’ve been working for.

A few medical factors will rule out treatment or require special consideration. We screen for these during your consultation to make sure any plan we recommend is the right fit:

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Fat dissolving injections are not used during pregnancy or while nursing. Treatment can be planned for after.
• Anticoagulants and bleeding considerations. Blood thinners and supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, and ginkgo raise bruising risk. We’ll review your full medication and supplement list and may ask you to pause certain items for about a week before treatment.
• Skin laxity and muscle weakness in the treatment area. These injections reduce fat but don’t tighten skin or strengthen muscle. If you have significant laxity or weakness in the area you want addressed, we may recommend a combination plan with skin-firming treatments or a different procedure entirely.
